Hiking in Sälenfjällen
In Sälenfjällen you can find
approx. 200 km of marked paths with a great number of rest
cottages.
They are named
after the place/mountain where they are located, for example:
Mellanfjällsstugan, Vålbrändan, Östfjällsstugan. The cottages
are not intended for overnight stay, only in case of an
emergency.
The paths are marked with red
and yellow crosses on poles. The red crosses marks
Sälenringen, which is the trail that surrounds the mountains.
The paths lead through varying terrain with different degree
of difficulties.
Sälenfjällen is a rather ”nice”
mountain with rounded tops. Even if it is easy to locate, a
map and a compass is very important to bring with you. The
inexperienced hiker should stay to the marked
paths.
Some winter paths could be directly unsuitable
to hike during summer, these are marked with a sign with an
crossed-out hiker. The best time for hiking is from
midsummer to middle September. During May and beginning of
June the snow is melting and the ground is wet.

Trips suggestions:
Högfjället – Kungsleden.
The first 2 km are asphalted and suits for example
wheel chairs and prams. Not to heavy climbing or hilly. In the
end of the asphalt lies a rest shelter and also a
lave.
The path continues to Östfjällsstugan which
lies beautifully beside a tarn. From there you can choose
either to return back to Gruven - Högfjället or continue to
Källfjället. The shorter tour is approx. 10 km and the longer
over Källfjället - Syndalen comes to approx. 25
km.
Kungsleden Starts/ends at
Högfjällshotellet and continues north all the way to Abisko if
you want to.
The southern part takes you to
Storlien through a varying and magnificent
landscape.
A part of Kungsleden makes together
with Vasaloppsleden Europaled 1. 1200 km of wandering paths in
Sweden. Goes between Grövelsjön and Varberg, and from there
continues to Syracusa on Sicily.
Hemfjället - Mellanfjället
The trips can start from Sälens Fjällkyrka or
Högfjällshotellet. During high season the lift in
Lindvallen is open for the more comfortable person. Several
paths reaches over Hemfjället, Mellanfjället and Storfjället
and could be varied at one’s own discretion.
Some
days during high season (July) there is a restaurant open in
Hemfjällsstugan. From Fjällkyrkan you have approx. 5 km to
Hemfjällsstugan and from Lindvallens top approx. 4 km. If you
choose to walk Sälenringen along Hemfjället, you have a
marvellous view to the east.
Tandådalen - Västra Kalven
A trip around Västra Kalven where the path meander
through the valley between the mountains.
An
easier trip for approx. 10 km, which passes Kalvtjärn, and
along Femån. Make sure you are on the summer path or else you
can get a footbath! The trip can be extended with approx. 5 km
if you take a visit to Kvillkojan.
Even
more adventurous could it be if you choose the north-western
part of the mountain. Stor- and Lill-Närfjället with Saldalen
between, it offers steeply rock ravines and more steeply
slopes. Maybe take a trip to Närsjön for a refreshing
bath.
The trip can be started at Tandådalen,
follow the path towards Myrflodammen. Turn left and follow the
path along Krubbäcken and further on to Närfjällsstugan. This
part of the trip could be a little bit wet, so boots are to
prefer. On the way back the trip goes over Stor-Närfjället
down to Orrliden and Tandådalen. This trip is approx. 15
km.
The trips around Närfjällen lies on
approx. 15 - 25 km and longer depending on which way you
choose. Parts of Närfjällen and Granfjällen is Domän
reserv.
In the northern parts lies Granfjället.
On the east side you find the highest spot in Sälenfjällen -
949 m (above the ocean). The northern side offers a
magnificent view over dalarna at Granfjällsbäcken. Here
Kungsleden leads out and continues to the
north.
The trip could be started at Stöten, path
to Västra Granfjället. From there through Kungsleden down to
Fuluforsmyren and back along a gravel road. Along the path the
trip becomes approx. 15 km.
Vasaloppsleden Vasaloppsleden
is an approx. 90 km long walking path which was opened 1991.
It follows almost along the Vasaloppets reaches and has its
terminal points in Berga village in Transtrand, 6 km south of
Sälens village and in Mora. During the way you pass all the
famous Vasalopps villages and chalets.
There are
eight overnight cottages along the way in seven different
places along the path. A map and more detailed path
description you can buy at the Tourist office.
Maps A map is a
very good item to have both for skilled and unfamiliarity
hikers. You can buy maps for instance at the Tourist office.
The local Fjällkartan gives also tips of places you can visit
during the walking trip. (The surveying has also several
different maps over the area).
Also procure
Fjällsäkerhetsrådets folder about hike in the mountains which
gives you a lot of tip and advise for your trip. You can get
it at the Tourist office.
Remember that the right of public
access also include the mountains - not disturb, not
destroy!
Of course there are a lot of
other alternatives and possibilities. Go out for an
excursion and find your own favourite place!
